Westmeath County Council Taking In Charge of Roads and Services
Taking in charge is a formal legal process by which responsibility for certain public areas, structures and services in a private residential development or estate are transferred to, or put in the charge of, a local authority.
Pursuant to Section 180 of the Planning & Development Act, 2000 (as amended) and in accordance with Section 11 of the Roads Act 1993, (as amended), notice is hereby given that Westmeath County Council as the Roads Authority for County Westmeath proposes to take in charge the roads, paths, public lights, open spaces, water supply system and both main foul and surface water sewerage systems and to declare the roads to be public roads in the housing estates listed hereunder, following the required statutory display and submissions procedures.

Maps showing the areas proposed to be taken in charge are available at the "Materials" tab or they can be inspected at the public counters at Áras An Chontae, Mount Street, Mullingar and at the Athlone Municipal District, Civic Offices, Church Street, Athlone from 9.30am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday (except for public holidays) from 14/07/2023 to 29/08/2023 inclusive.
Submissions or representations in relation to the proposed taking in charge area should be made in writing before close of business on 29/08/2023 and will be considered by the Council.
Submissions or observations should be in ONE medium only i.e. online or hard copy and shall be entitled “Taking in Charge” and made as follows:-
