Clonmellon is not clearly included in plans for the development of the North Westmeath Tourism Cluster initiative, which stems from the Castlepollard settlement plan. Clonmellon is a gateway to Westmeath, and has growth potential for tourism, and leveraging tourists from the Boyne Valley Tourism are, adjacent to us. Killua Castle, in Clonmellon is an up and coming tourism attraction
There are many road safety issue in Clonmellon, due to its main street being the very busy N52. this impacts us currently, but will also impact on the developments outlines in the settlement plan- especially the amenity park (CPO8.215). if these issues are not resolved before any further developments take place the issues could be exacerbated. Speeding and poor driver behavior through the village is a constant threat to residents and children. The School is in the centre of the village and it is not announced sufficiently by signage, road markings. pedestrian crossings. Bus Parking is poor and results is dangerous alighting by children. The view into the village at both N52 entrances is obscured by bends and traffic doe not slow down enough coming through the village. serious concerns of accidents or pedestrians being struck.
I am concerned that the policies in the existing development plan are being unnecessarily diluted.
It is our opinion that the extension of the boundary will have a positive impact on the village. The availability of such housing will mean many locals who previously struggled to attain planning permission in the surrounding rural areas could now remain in the village.
