Pursuant to the requirements of the above, notice is hereby given that Westmeath County Council proposes to undertake the following works:
Proposed development 0.06-hectare site located at Bastion Quay, Athlone, County Westmeath. The proposed development consists of:
An increase in height of a 110m section of the existing Bastion Quay flood defence wall (As constructed pursuant to Part 8 approval, Ref. No. LAA 10 2018 Flood Defence Works Flood Ce/11 Deerpark) from 36.56m OD to 36.86m OD (increase of c. 300mm) to include a sloped capping on top of the wall resulting in a maximum height of 37.21m OD.
Associated relocation and reuse of approximately 98m existing Bastion Quay flood defence wall railing and the provision of approximately 11m length new railing on top of raised wall resulting in a maximum height of c. 37.84m OD.
Associated increase in the height of a demountable flood barrier by 300mm.
The section of wall to be raised extends from the southern property boundary of the Bastion Quay apartments to the tie-in with the Shannon Weir apartments boundary north of Bastion Quay.
The proposed Part 8 development has undergone Appropriate Assessment (AA) Screening under the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) and an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Screening under Planning and Development Regulations 2001(as amended). No likely significant effects were identified during the AA and EIA Screening processes. Therefore, there is no requirement to proceed to the next stage of AA or for a Natura Impact Statement (NIS) to be produced. In addition, the proposed development is not a development that triggers the requirement for an EIA and subsequent preparation of an EIA Report as per the prescribed classes of development and thresholds and criteria set out in Schedules 5 and 7 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001(as amended). Any person may, within 4 weeks from the date of publication of this notice, apply to An Coimisiún Pleanala for a screening determination as to whether the proposed development would be likely to have significant effects on the environment.
